f you want to build a successful life and goal system, it is essential to step back and analyze your current position: who you are, what you want, where you want to be. In this article, you will learn and use a framework to understand yourself a bit better and start building a system to accomplish your goals and drive your identity changes.

You can follow the series and build a system along or support me and **get the whole notion self-growth** **system** [here](https://gum.co/notion-self-growth).

I struggled to bring my goals to life for a long time until I learned that a holistic system is crucial for achieving them. I had obscure goals in my head without a proper system that can change how I live and align myself with the goals I set.

Once I implemented a system and started using it, my life suddenly changed its course and I've noticed positive changes in many areas such as personal growth, career, and relationships.

# Self-reflection analysis in Notion

The problem of many is that people do not know what they truly want and value. Second, they want changes without affecting their personality, which results in failed experience. The reason is that the goals and the identity are not aligned.

For instance, I cannot become an entrepreneur if my identity cannot withhold failures and take risks. I have to figure out what hinders me and change my identity so that my life aligns with what I want and what I have.

That's why it's essential to self-reflect and learn yourself better. You will use the knowledge you gain from the analysis to build the necessary habits to support your endeavors.

You will start from birth up until now, think about what's good and what's not, what has to be changed, and why you made certain decisions.

Notion is an excellent platform for such analysis because you have a record of your thoughts and the results can be used later in planning and execution.

It's a 4 part series in which I will show you how to build a fully functioning self-growth system to help you achieve your goals and align your life.

# Step 1. Outline your life so far

Starting from birth, outline your major life/career/lifestyle decisions up until today.

Think about the reasons, the outcome, what could you do differently, and what was missing.

To plan better, it's essential to understand your current position and the decisions you made in the past.

# Step 2. What do you want?

Most of the people only drift with the current and do not realize what they really want.

Take a step back to think about the future and what would you like to do with it. Everything is possible with proper planning and execution.

I used to live a life where every day repeats and nothing changes. However, once I started to set real goals and take action on them, things started to shift and improve.

Now think about your future life in 1, 3 and 5 years. What do you want to change, build or improve?

## List your aspirations

Use the answers from the previous questions to define a few aspirations, projects, habits that you would like to build now.

# Step 3. Find your true values

This part of the analysis was inspired by Tim Urban's [article](https://waitbutwhy.com/2018/04/picking-career.html) about finding the right career. I even made the Notion [version](https://www.maray.ai/posts/how-to-find-the-right-career-path-with-a-framework-in-notion) of it.

The idea is to find your core values and support your goals with them.

Your yearnings are defined by a few groups of rewards. These groups are `Personal`, `Lifestyle`, `Practical`, `Moral`, and `Social`. There's always a constant battle between them to guide you and motivate you for certain decisions.

For instance, if your Social rewards are stronger than Personal, then you might be more inclined towards altruistic decisions.

Sometimes, it feels frustrating because you do something that is not aligned with what you strive for. That's why it's essential to dig deep and discover what **you really** **value and believe in**.

If you feel insecure, then most of your decisions might be inclined towards filling that insecurity. Most of the time it happens automatically because it operates under the limbic system authority which is stronger than your rational neocortex.

The yearnings you find will help you to guide your goals and motivate yourself. It's a cool way to understand yourself better and take control of the reigns.

Tim Urban explained it well in the [article](https://waitbutwhy.com/2018/04/picking-career.html) about finding a career.

Finding a career and a life path you want to build is essentially the same. The insight is based on who you are and where you want to be.

## Analyze your past decision and find out what motivates you and what you value the most.

Assign one of the area to each yearning.

## What is the source?

Using first principles, ask your self why you want or feel this or that way. Step by step you will arrive at the point where your value or yearning originated from.

Once you find the source, ask yourself: **Do I really want this or it was installed in me by someone else?**

To discover your true self, you have to find what values belong to core you and what has derived from society, parents, and so on.

Mark the result of your self-interrogation in the column. Now you can focus on values that represent your authentic self.

## Rank your yearnings & fears

Try to rank those values in order of what you care about most.

- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — things you cannot live without

- ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — things to strive hard for

- ⭐⭐⭐ — things you cannot disregard

- ⭐⭐ — things to keep in mind

- ⭐ — things to reject

# Step 4. Update your Aspirations

With all of this in mind, write down what potentially you want to build or change in your life. Did you find a new insight that can influence your aspirations? Was there something hidden or imposed by someone else?

# Final thoughts

I hope you learned something new about yourself after the thorough analysis that you did. Your findings will be valuable in the Planning and Execution phases.

First, you will align your aspirations, goals and projects with your true beliefs and values. Doing so will promote necessary identity changes to support your vision.

Second, once you feel down and unmotivated, these values will help you to give motivation and second wind to achieve your goals.

Next week I'll explain how to use all the valuable knowledge from the self-reflection for planning and then later execution. See you next time.
